No overnight parking for camper vans will be allowed on the grounds of Cookstown High School, due to health and saftety and insurance reasons.

Parking will be made available on the day of the competition as usual.

Urgent information The Co Down section yesterday took the decision to cancel the 2012 5th May event due to diminishing bands attending. Over a few days it went from 26 to 16 and some of those may not have attended. We apologise to the bands who were prepared to support us but we felt it was not viable to continue. Derryclavin Pipe Band Launches debut CD

Derryclavin Pipe Band Launched its debut CD 'the Clavin' at the bands '90th on the road' concert at the Ardhowen Theatre, Enniskillen on Friday 16th March.

The CD has 20 tracks and features Maguiresbridge Silver Band and the ever popular Session Beat along side Derryclavin Pipe Band in a number of the recordings.

The Cd's are available from any band member or by contacting Pipe Major Gordon McKeown 07729472935.

The CD is reasonably priced at £10 per copy.

The band receives its name from the townland in which it is situated. Derryclavin is just outside Lisbellaw, five miles from Enniskillen.

Following our latest meeting of the Co.Antrim section last Tuesday it has been passed again for this years competition, that there will be NO ENTRY FEE for DRUM MAJORS or BANDS.

So can I appeal for all drum majors & bands to make a special effort to attend this years contest In Ballymoney RFC under the hospices of Ballymoney Borough Council. This is going to be a special day for Ballymoney as it is their annual Ballymoney Agricultral Show in the Ballymoney Showgrounds from 9am - 4pm & the Co.Antrim Championships in Ballymoney RFC. Formed in 1922 Derryclavin Pipe Band are delighted to be celebrating their 90th Anniversary as well as the launch of their first CD. The band, currently under the direction of Pipe Major Gordon McKeown and Drum Sergeant Richard Moore, are the proud wearers of the Royal Stewart tartan. This evening promises to be a very exciting event with performances from the ever popular Session Beat, Bready Ulster Scot Dancers and Maguiresbridge Silver Band. BBC Pipe Dream broadcast

Just a quick piece of information the programmes recorded and directed by Alex Johnston during the season will be shown next Wednesday night 30th BBC2 7 30pm. More information will be posted later today. Two great new Pipe Band programmes on BBC Two Northern Ireland Pipe Dreamers – Wednesday 30th November and Wednesday 7th December, BBC2 Northern Ireland @ 1930. Richard Parkes has been pipe major of the Field Marshal Montgomery pipe band for thirty years. In that time, he has won the Grade One World Championships on six occasions. In 2010, he was runner up to his friend, Terry Tully, pipe major of the Saint Laurence O’Toole band from Dublin. In these two programmes we follow Terry and Richard from the start of the 2011 season as one tries to hold on to his title and the other strives to take it from him. With unrestricted access to the two pipe majors through planning, rehearsal and into the performance arena, this is an insider’s view into the world of competition pipe bands and just what it takes to be the champions of the world.

Honours Senior World Champion D/M Alicia Dickson

The Mid-Ulster Section held a presentation evening for Senior World Champion Alicia Dickson, Drum Major with the Matt Boyd Memorial Pipe Band. Alicia was crowned Senior World Champion in Glasgow in August and Section Secretary presented Alicia with a mace as her gift to mark her achievement in Glasgow earlier this year.

Gloria Aicken stated it is not only an honour to Alicia and her family but to the Mid-Ulster Section as well.

Workshop for Grade 4 Bands

The RSPBA NI School has enlisted PM Richard Parkes, PM Frank Andrews and DS Keith Orr to launch the first in a series of Pipe Band Workshops : Tonal Balance Workshop 1 - "Setting the Foundation for Tonal Balance"

Grade 4 Bands are invited to send two representatives to the Tonal Balance Workshop which will take place on Tuesday 22nd November, 8pm to 10pm, in Garvagh P.B. Hall, opposite the High School, Main Street, Garvagh.

The School is also planning Workshop 2 for the Tyrone / Fermanagh Region and will announce details of this shortly.

Please be advised that the playing requirements for Grade 4A bands in Championship Competitions in the 2012 season will be as follows:

2 x two parted 2/4 marches

2 x two parted strathspeys

2 x two parted reels

All tunes to be selected from the list of MAP tunes as published on the RSPBA website. No additional tunes will be added for the coming season however the list may be increased for the 2013 season.

AGM Fermanagh Section - Monday 12th September

The AGM season is now upon us and the County Fermanagh Section will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday 12th September. All Section Bands will be very welcome at the meeting which is in the Railway Hotel at 8:00 p.m.

Cowal Champions

The season came to a close with another very successful day for Northern Ireland bands. Bellaghy took the grade 4B title which is there first major championship win for 37 years.

Grade 2 Seven Towers picked up where they left off at the World Championships this time adding the drumming prize to the overall championship first place prize. The band were also crowned R.S.P.B.A. Grade 2 Champion of Champions 2011.

Field Marshal Montgomery rounded off the perfect season with yet another win. The band completed the Major Championship Grand Slam (winning all 5 RSPBA Major Championships in a single season) for the second time in their history. This gave the band the perfect 30 point score and won the title R.S.P.B.A. Grade 1 Champion of Champions 2011.

The final curtain call for local bands was held at Portrush on Saturday. the 50 plus bands enjoyed a beautiful day on the North Coast. Coleraine Borough Council were our splendid hosts.

The popular event and street parade saw tens of thousands line the street to cheer on the bands who were all in a celebration mood. A great end to our season.

Some are already in Glasgow but the annual tartan migration to Scotland will be reaching its peak over the next few hours. The NI Branch would like to wish all those travelling to 'The Green' every success on Saturday. All those nights of practice have been focused toward this event and we hope they are suitably rewarded. We hope to see as many NI Branch Bands and Drum Majors as possible make it to finals, prize lists and ultimately take those coveted first place World Champion titles.

Ulster Championships Banbridge

The 60th Ulster Championships were held at Banbridge Rugby Club grounds today. Weather was reasonbable to start but we had some heavy rain mid afternoon, but the show went on and we were able to have our march past and prize giving in dry sunny conditions. The Local Banbridge Council very represented by their Chairman Joan Baird MBE who welcomed all to the area she made a presentation to Manawatu Band from New Zealand who enjoyed their trip to be with us. We look forward to many more such visits. Our local MP David Simpson also attended.

European Championships to be Live Streamed on Web

A number of agencies have come together in order to stream the European Pipe Band Championships live from Belfast on Saturday, 30th of July. The project will be delivered by Lurgan Junior High School (Northern Ireland) and is part funded by the Ulster-Scots Agency with special assistance from the local RSPBA NI Branch. This is a first of its kind for the school and as well as live streaming the Grade 1 contest, they will also record several other elements of the Championship and will aim to carry out interviews with participants and spectators throughout the day.

President of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, and NI Branch Chairman George Ussher says "this exciting opportunity arose through discussions between Lurgan Junior High School and our Branch Secretary David Scott and we are looking forward to showcasing the event to all those from around the world who are unable to be with us in Belfast for the Championships."

The Ulster Championships will be held on the 6th August at Banbridge Rugby Club Grounds Newry Road.

Car parking will be a designated field off the Newry Road it will be signed. Only Officials, Disabled permit holders, Coaches and Judges will be admitted to the club car park.

The entrance to the Club by Ardleys Lane will be manned from early morning.

Please park as directed in the field provided. there is access to the contest arenas from this field.

The band draw has been modified re times grade 3B 3A pease make a note of this for your information.

Belfast City Council have advised that onsite camper van parking will incur a charge of £20 per night, with a maximum 2 night stay to be paid and booked pre-arrival. They can only accommodate 30 vehicles. Access to this space will be on Friday evening only between 6pm and 10pm. Portaloos would be available but no access to other facilities such as power/running water. A booking form is attached.

11.30am will be the dress time for Seniors, then we will run your heats straight away at 12 noon, Grade 4A bands will play for these heats.
The dress for the other grades will be at 12.30pm, then followed by their heats at 1.30pm.
This change has been made to allow for a function in the Town Hall at 12.30-13 30pm

From a green field site at 7 30am today the NI Branch organised the 66th All Ireland Championships. The planning for many months certainly paid off today in what was deemed by many to be one of the best All Ireland Championships. on receiving an M.B.E. in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Brian is a former
Senior World Champion and has been active in Drum Majoring, both competing and
teaching, for a long number of years. With a busy summer of competition and trip
to Buckingham Palace to fit in we can only hope that the investiture doesn't
clash with the World Championships!

With only one single entrant for Grade one, we are delighted that the current Grade One World Champion's St Laurence O'Toole are still supporting the section and will be in attendance to entertain the crowds with a number of selections. The band will perform for approximately 20 mins (more details will follow).

Drum Majors dress will commence at 11.30am. The first band will play at 12 noon.

Enniskillen R.B.L has arranged a very informal family Pre Pipe Band Contest BBQ with Music and Dancing for Friday 27^th May, from 8.00 -11.00p.m. this is the evening prior to the Fermanagh contest. They are very aware that a large number of contest participants and supporters travel down to Enniskillen for the weekend and feel that this is an ideal opportunity to have a get together and chat prior to the contest. They also wanted to support our Section by putting this event on. Music and Dancing will be to Patricia Rogers who last year was the Fermanagh Chieftain of the Day and delighted the gathering by singing at the presentation. Costs, we are informed are very reasonable, Burgers £2:50, Hot Dogs £2.00 and admission to the dancing is £2.00 per adult with children free. Do come along to the evening, members of the Fermanagh Section will be there to make you all very welcome.

Co. Fermanagh Update

As happened last year Fermanagh District Council does not allow Motor Homes or Caravans to park overnight in the grounds of the Lakeland Forum. Our Section did arrange for alternative private parking last year but it was clear that the owners of motor homes/caravans are happier to make their own arrangements which appeared to be very satisfactory. While we have not arranged any alternative parking this year, if there is a demand we will try and facilitate. Please contact the Section Secretary, Ray Hall by email if you would wish this to be pursued at ray.n.hall@btinternet.com

The Section would prefer it if Caravans or Motor homes do not enter into the grounds of the Lakeland Forum on the Saturday of the Contest as we anticipate the spaces in the Forum car park areas will be under pressure. There is a free public car park just opposite the British Legion and also beside Enniskillen Castle (KFC Entrance), both of which are ideal for the contest. We would advise however to get there early!

Arts Council’s Musical Instruments for Bands Grant

The Arts Council programme opens 9th May 2011 and deadline for applications is 4pm on 2 June 2011.

This is a very tight turnaround time and the application has to be accompanied by a number of policies, quotes and attachments. It is expected that bands who have previously been awarded this funding from 2004-2011 will be excluded.

The Ulster Scots Community Network in conjunction with the Confederation of Ulster Bands & RSPBA (NI) are hosting 2 informal information sessions on Wednesday 11th May 2011. We appreciate that this is short notice but feel that it is important to get bands started on applications etc as soon as possible due to the short application window.

These will take place simultaneously in the Royal Hotel, Cookstown and the Island Centre, Lisburn - both commencing at 8pm.

In order to register a place/s at one of these events, please email your name/s, band and contact details to info@ulster-scots.com before 1pm on Wednesday 11th May.

International Piping in the Park Solos 2011

Aughintober Pipe band is hosting an International Piping in the Park competition in Dungannon on Saturday 14th May.

This unique event will see 6 solo pipers represent their countries in order to take home the title of International Piping in the Park Champion 2011.

The players are as follows-

USA- Donald MacPhee (FMM)
England - James Gore (FMM)
Scotland - Gordon McCreedy (FMM)
Canada - Andrea Boyd (SLOT)
Northern Ireland - Jonathan Greenlees (FMM)
Ireland - Kevin Rogers (SLOT)

The format of the event is that each player will have a max of 20min on stage. They must submit an MSR and after that it is the stage belongs to each of the players as entertainment is the main focus.

The players will be judged on playing and entertainment value.

I know you are wondering where this event will take place-

well the venue is the Beer Tent in Dungannon Park, and it will all kick off at 7.30pm.

Tickets for this fantastic night can be purchased from any Aughintober band member or email Gail on press@rspbani.org or 07738787043 or aughintoberpipeband.com and i can send you some. They are priced at £7.50 per head but we are offering a deal for groups who wish to purchase more than one- book 5 tickets and they will be £35 (£7 each), or 10 tickets and they £65 (£6.50 each).

Cullybackey Solos Results

The 24^th Annual Piping & Drumming Solos held by Cullybackey Pipe Band took place on Saturday (2^nd April 2011) at Cullybackey High School. The event saw a customary high level of entries in the youth grades - all of whom were competing for first, second and third place in their respective grades. Those who didn’t reach the prize list received a ‘Young Achiever’s Award’ - a youth-centric scheme created & pioneered by the band since the turn of the millennium, with a view of encouraging all young active participants.

It kicked off around 10am with the Practice Chanter & Juvenile Drumming grades, and continued throughout the day showcasing some of the country’s most promising young talent alongside some of the more accomplished solo players. Every grade saw a respectable audience & the support for both the band & the competitors was commendable.

A respected Scottish piper, Donald McKay of Scottish Power Pipe Band, and local adjudicator Willie Garrett judged the pipers, whilst Mark Wilson - formerly of RUC & Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band - was the local drumming judge. Catering was available throughout the day as provided by the band’s Ladies Committee and those present had the opportunity to enter a raffle. The band would like to extend their thanks for the continued support of the pipe band community, both for their own efforts and the efforts of all those who competed.

All-Ireland Junior Solo Changes

On Saturday past the JAC agreed to pilot a new system for the Junior Grade All-Ireland Solo Piping and Drumming in 2011. The grade will be split into two grades Junior A and Junior B. In the first year the Junior A grade will consist of all the 2010 Junior finalists who do not move to the Intermediate grade along with all entrants attached to Grade 1 bands.

If the pilot is successful and is adopted for future years then the top 3 in the Junior B grade at the All-Ireland will move automatically to the Junior A grade. This applies to the All-Ireland Junior Solo Piping and Drumming. Junior Piping and Drumming events at other competitions will not be affected.

Seven Towers Pipe Band presents "U B The Judge" Invitational solos. Ireland's premier entertaining solo piping competition with £500 prize money split between 4 prizes. Each player gives a 15 minute recital and at the end of the night, the crowd judges the most entertaining pipers.

Presentation of N.I. Champion of Champions 2010 Drum Major Trophy

George Ussher, the Chairman of The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association N.I. Branch, travelled to Fermanagh with Kenny Crothers, N.I. National Council Representative to present Drum Major David Brownlee with the prestigious N.I. Champion of Champions Senior Drum Major trophy at a ceremony on Monday 14th February in the Railway Hotel, Enniskillen.

George Ushher. N.I Chairman said:
"It gives me enormous pleasure to present to Drum Major Brownlee the N.I. Champion of Champions Senior Drum Major Trophy. It takes a huge effort over the contest season to win this hotly contested trophy which contains the names of famous and world champion Drum Majors."

Jim Henderson, President of the Fermanagh Section RSPBANI said:
"Drum Major David Brownlee has been an outstanding representative of Derryclavin Pipe Band and Fermanagh bands generally in competition for many years. We are absolutely delighted that he has had such a successful season competing in 2010 and look forwards to seeing him out again in the competition arena next year." He added, "David also carried out the duties of Public Relations Officer for our Section and really does a great job for us. I know that he also gives up a great deal of his time to teach novice, junior and juvenile Drum Majors. He is a credit to the pipe band movement and we are very proud to have him associated with our Section."

David is delighted to be the first Fermanagh person to win the award. "At the twilight of my drum major career I would like to thank my mum and dad (Norman and Margaret Brownlee) and also my wife Lorraine for their continued support over the years. I have two kids Kayla 2 years of age and Aarron 9 months old.
"I would also like to thank my Band - Derryclavin Pipe Band for their support, I have been a member of the band for the whole of my Drum Major Career, from 6 years of age."

Solitude Park Banbridge 2011

7th May will again see the Solitude Park event staged for the 2nd year. Praised by many in 2010 as a great venue it has been decided to stage it again. It is hoped the local traders will support this event. Travel Solutions have again indicated their support. This venue is a natural amphitheatre setting and the section would hope for great support once again. The street parade will be replaced with band performances in town during the day. Make this event the start to your bands new season. Entry details will be sent out soon.

The Cleland Mem. have 10 - 15 spare seats to the 2011 World Pipe Band Championships. They would estimate £100 per person to include coach & ferry travel, leaving from Bangor (or meet at the ferry) on Friday Morning 12th August & Returning on Sunday afternoon 14th August.

Banbridge Concert

Banbridge District Council are running a charity concert in aid of Diabetes UK on Saturday 29th Jan 2011. Headling the concert are the 2011 World Pipe Band Champions, St Laurence O'Toole, with support from Baillies Mills Accordian Band and the Banbridge Musicial Society. The evening will be compered by Gene Fitzpatrick and doors open at 7.30pm at Dromore Community Centre. This should be a fine night of quality music not to be missed. Tickets are priced at £10 and are available from numerous outlets in the Banbridge area (see attached flyer), admission is also payable at the door.

The 60th Annual General Meeting of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, Northern Ireland Branch will take place at Trinity Methodist Church Hall on Saturday 13th of November, 2010 at 10:30am for an 11am start.

There will be a lunch break from 1pm to 2pm. I would appeal to all bands to be represented as it is for their own benefit. Each band may send two representatives who shall be entitled to speak at the meeting if their band is in compliance i.e. a paid up member for 2010. The voting power of any band is ONE BAND ONE VOTE.

Following very poor attendance at recent section meetings and notice that many of the existing officers will not be standing for re-election it is proposed to discuss the future viability of the Co Antrim Section.

Please find attached the main prize winners in the 2010 All Ireland Solos. The event attracted a huge list of players resulting in a play of in Junior Piping an Drumming.

Our thanks goes to the Rea Family for donating a fine new trophy in memory of Bobby Rea who is no stranger to solos events. Bobby passed away a few weeks ago this trophy will serve to remember his legacy within the pipe band solos scene. The thanks of the JAC goes to the family and indeed to The PSNI Pipe Band who orgainsed the trophy.

Results of the various grades are attached thanks again to all who made it a great success.

Portrush Contest results

Well we have finally arrived at our last local event. Portrush is always a popular event in this seaside location. With a number of withdrawals the event went very well all day with a very large crowd enjoying our final event.

Congratulations go to all our bands winners at all contests the highlight of the march past was the parade of champions Upper Crossgare, Gransha Geoghegan and Ravara with Emma Barr and Samantha Gordon leading the parade. They were greeted with rapturous applause from a capacity audience. Very well done to all.

Presenations were made to the winners by Nelson McCausland MLA Culture Minister. In his speech he spoke highly of what the branch bands had achieved this year.

Another superb set of results for the NI Branch on Saturday at the World Pipe Band Championships. Four of the 6 Adult band grades were won by Branch bands with runner up positions in the other 2. Add to that Juvenile and Junior World Champion Drum Majors and it really was a special day for so many. Our congratulations to all the prize winners.

Not long now to the biggest pipe band show on earth gets underway. The practices are almost complete and everyone is ready to put their best foot forward on Saturday. The Northern Ireland Branch would like to take this opportunity to wish all Bands and Drum Majors every success at the World Championships and with special best wishes to the N.I. Bands and Drum Majors. We've been very fortunate to have been well represented in the prizes for the last number of years but all that is in the past now and it's up to the class of 2010 to make their own history. N.I. competitors have never gone over to Scotland to make up the numbers and this year is no exception with contenders in each of the 6 Adult Band Grades and all 3 Drum Major Grades. To modify that old Irish blessing, May your rolls end together, may your drones always be in tune and may your mace always return save to your hand! Good luck and as we say on this side of the sheugh, Keep 'er Lit!

2010 European Tenor Drumming Championship

The 2010 Tenor Drum Competition held on Friday 6^th August drew an amazing audience to the Grand Ballroom in the Europa Hotel Belfast. Adjudicators for the event were Lynn Ward and Stephen McQuillam both of whom enjoyed the high standard of competition throughout all the grades. With such a large number of performances to adjudicate the competition ran on into evening. Thanks to the adjudicators and to Gary Smyth who put so much work into the organising and running of this very successful event.

The Ulster Championships Lisburn

The Ulster Championshiops were held on Sat in Lisburn. This contest attracted a large turnout of bands and spectators making their last pitch for prizes before the Worlds next week. We had bands from the USA Oran Mor and LA Scots both bands enjoyed the ulster hospitality.

What an evening of music. Great entertainment from start to finish from two of the all-time great bands. Our thanks go to Pipe Majors Terry Lee and Richard Parkes and their bands for the effort they put in to making it a really special night. The number of joint sets were beyond everyone's expectations. Our thanks also go to Belfast City Council for their support with the whole festival. Finally a big thank you to all the people that attended the concert, the atmosphere really was electric and the crowd played their part in a night to remember.

Congratulations to Angus McIlroy from Raffrey Pipe Band who won the special prize draw of an iPod Touch with all the Albums from SFU and FMM. As a bonus 3 albums from Bad Haggis were also included as a thank you to Eric Rigler for kindly granting permission to print the setting of The B-52 in the programme. Our thanks also to Robert MacNeil for the kind permission to reproduce the setting of Blackie MacLeod.

Not long to go until the PipeUp! festival kicks off on Saturday evening. The Festival Club is being held in the Conference and Exhibition Centre in the the Europa Hotel in Belfast. Doors open at 8.45pm.

There is a full bill of talent and the evening gets underway with Canntaireachd, a new group formed from the Armagh area featuring Highland and Uilleann Pipes. Next up is Andrew Carlisle, Alen Tully and Friends, neither of those guys need any introduction to a piping audience. Following on will be a group from the Armagh Pipers Club, these guys and gals never fail to deliver music of the highest quality. Bernagh are next to the stage, they are one of the most exciting groups featuring pipes to come out of Ireland in years. To round the evening off it's the one and only Fred Morrison Band. A true pioneer of music on pipes and whistles this is a great opportunity to see the man on one of his all to seldom visits to Northern Ireland.

Quality music from start to finish and all for the modest entry fee of £5 (£3 concessions) payable at the door on the evening. What better way to round off the day of the European, whether your a local or visiting for the Championships, than in the Festival Club.

Local and International Piping Stars to Strut their stuff in ONE-NIGHT-ONLY Fundraiser Event

The Banbridge Pipe Band proudly presents 'A Night O' Blow-ins', a one-time-only of local and international prize-winning soloists. Being held at the Banbridge Rugby Club in Banbridge, Co. Down, on Saturday, 07 August 2010, the night of good craic and great piping will feature Alex Gandy of Halifax, Canada, Kevin Rogers of Kilkeel, Northern Ireland, Jonathan Greenlees of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, and Ian Lyons, a native of Banbridge and now from Melbourne, Australia.

'We are so honoured and excited to have these four fantastic pipers perform at our event,' says Meaghan Proudfoot, event organizer and Banbridge Pipe Band member. 'There is such an excellent array of superstar soloists in Northern Ireland that week for the PipeUP! Festival and we want to wrap the week up with a laid back event that¹s all about good craic and great piping.'

All four pipers are donating their time and talent to help the Banbridge Pipe Band raise funds for new uniforms. Each is a prize-winning soloist and a member of a top grade one competitive pipe band. The evening will have an 'International meets Northern Ireland' theme with each soloist performing a 25-30 minute set of their choosing.

The Banbridge Pipe band was founded in 1952 and continues to serve the community through performances and the teaching of beginning pipers and drummers. Currently led by Pipe Major Leigh Anderson, it competes at the Grade 3B level. Find out more by visiting us online at

The inaugural European Solo Tenor Drumming Championships will take place on Friday 6th of August from 1pm in the Europa Hotel. The Championship, which is part of the PipeUp! Festival aims to attract tenor drummers from around the globe and become a yearly fixture in the competitive calendar.

The playing requirements have now been aligned to the Grades that the competitors compete with in their bands. New Requirements and Entry documents are attached.

I was contacted last night regarding a band needing some accomodation for the European Pipe band Championships in July. Glenrothes and District Pipe Band have recently reformed, their first contest is the British. They are also coming over to Belfast for the Europeans, but their problem is that they are self funding their trip to Belfast, and are looking for a hall with toilet facilities and showers that they could use for the weekend. The Annual Down Section contest were held in Bangor for this year. Yet another great day out by the seaside with blue skys all day and a very large attendance of spectators. The Mayor of North Down Council was Chieftain and he shared the prize giving by Lady Sylvia Hermon MP for North Down. Both expressed their enjoyment of the day at Bangor Contest

Co Fermanagh Championships

The bands converged of Enniskillen for the annual section championships. A good attendence of bands in Grades 4b 4a 3b 3a with poor support from Grade 2.

The day was overcast with light rain for a time which did not mar the enjoyment of another Fermanagh event.

One of the highlights was the chieftain Councillor Patricia Rodgers who as well as being chieftain is a well known singer and she finished of the day with a rendition of 'A Pretty Little Girl from Omagh'. This was greeted with great applause from the audience, a novel way to end a very successful day in the Lakeland County.

MOTOR HOME/CARAVAN PARKING - FERMANAGH CHAMPIONSHIPS: SATURDAY 29^th MAY

The Section Chairman has arranged alternative parking (available from Friday 28^th May evening) for Motor Homes/Caravan at Stuarts Car Park. This is a private car park (well known in the town) accessed from the Sligo Road, Enniskillen, approx 5 minutes walk from the contest venue. Traffic should follow the signs for Sligo through Enniskillen to the traffic lights on the bridge just past Enniskillen Castle, turn left at the lights and the car park entry is the first entry just a few hundred yards on the left on Henry Street It is directly opposite Enniskillen Castle (next to garden centre).

The Section would prefer it if Caravans or Motor homes do not enter into the grounds of the Lakeland Forum on the Saturday of the Contest as we anticipate the spaces in the car park areas will be under pressure. There is a free public car park just opposite the British Legion and also beside Enniskillen Castle (KFC Entrance).

CHARITY CONCERT – ENNISKILLEN BRITISH LEGION: FRIDAY 28^th MAY

Moybrone Pipe Band are supporting their Drum Sgt Christopher Lindsay on his journey to build housing in Africa by putting on a Charity Concert in Enniskillen British Legion on Friday Night from 7:30 – 12:00. All the proceeds raised go toward the Tanzanian House Building Project by the Leprosy Mission NI. Special guests include well known local singer Patricia Rogers, (who is also Chieftain of the Day on Saturday) Maguiresbridge Scottish Dancers, Irish Dancers, Piping, Drumming Ceilidh group, Fluters with Patricia playing for Dancing when concert concludes. The much anticipated Bann river contests took place Sat with a backdrop of clear blue skies and a very large and appreciative audience. The decision by the Down Section to move to this outdoor event to trial run this venue was said by many to be a winner. While we could have had a few more bands event the ones that withdrew right up to that morning. It will be a decision by the section on wheather we continue with this event and we would be interested to hear peoples comments on all aspects of this contest you can email me on gha9291112@aol.com

It has been brought to my attention from the Fermanagh Section that NO overnight parking will be allowed at the competition site of Lakeland Forum held on 29/5/10. Fermanagh District Council does not allow overnight parking at the Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen, and will enforce this by prosecuting anyone who does. The Fermanagh Section has made provision for alternative close by parking arrangements for overnight stay. Note: Last year the Lakeland Forum had 48 Camper vans at the venue.

Despite suffering from the effects of the Iceland problem our two piping judges made a great effort to attent this year's solos and our thanks go to Tom Spiers and Dugald McNeill for their efforts. Our Scottish Drumming judges did not make it but W Barham and S Steele stood in at the last minute thanks go to them also.

The Senior Piping was won by A Carlisle and the drumming by Chris McNichol

The thanks of the branch was expressed at the prize giving by Chairman George Ussher to all who had make this years Ulster Solos a success.

Grade 4 Dual Registered Leading Drummer Form

The form to register a Dual Registered Leading Drummer can be found in the Documents section here. This must be completed and returned at least 14 days prior to the first competition that the Dual Registered Leading Drummer intends to play in.

Bands are reminded of the following rules:

The main player registration held with R.S.P.B.A. Headquarters MUST be with the higher grade band.
The dual registration is only valid for competitions run under Northern Ireland Branch rules.
The dual registration must be with a Grade 4A or Grade 4B band only.
The dual registered Leading Drummer is in addition to the minimum of 2 snare drummers required in grade 4. i.e. when a dual registered Leading Drummer is playing there should be a minimum total of 3 snare drummers.

Please note the following:
The dual registered Leading Drummer is NOT permitted to play with the Grade 4 band at the five R.S.P.B.A. Major Championships.

With the retirement of the Branch Press Officer Mervyn McConnell in November, the association has been looking to find a replacement and it has now been confirmed that Gail Graham has taken up the post.

Gail, from Rathfriland, is currently a piper in Aughintober Pipe Band from Castlecaulfield.

Gail says, "It is an honour to take on this role and I have a hard person to follow as Mervyn was always out on the prowl and first to inform people of much needed pipe band news. I would appeal to all pipe band fanatics to please keep me up-to-date with all information and I will do my best to get the information out there. Seven Towers Pipe Band are running their U B The Judge Invitational Solo Competition on Saturday, 20th of March at the Michelin Social and Athletic Club located on the Woodside Road, Ballymena.

The event will start at 7:30 and the 12 invited players will each give a 15 minute recital. Audience votes will determine 1st to 4th place.

The Outlet at Bridgewater Park Banbridge and Travel Solutions of Belfast have just agreed support for our 8th May street parade after the contest. Both companies are long standing supporters to the Pipe Band Association.

Office Disruption

The Bachelors Walk office suffered a burst pipe during the cold weather spell in January. As a result the office is currently being moved to a temporary location in the Enterprise Crescent Business Park on the Ballinderry Road Lisburn.

The telephone/internet transfer is pending with BT so in the meantime there is no telephone service available to the office. Emails will be responded to but please understand any delay as they can only be checked at certain times during the day.

We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. More details will be posted here when they become available.

Update: The telephone line and internet connection are now working. Normal service should now be resumed.

Bann River Pipe Band Contest 8th May 2010

Planning for this new outdoor contest are gathering pace. The Local Council have agreed financial support for this event and all thinks are being put in place. This contest will replace the indoor contest in Banbridge for this year. Solitude Park has been given a face lift recently and because it is in the centre of town it was agreed to promote this event in the new facility. With a parade of the town for great cash prizes in the region of £1000 this event should prove popular with the bands .

It will be a free day for those attending. More details will be issued soon

Co Down Contests 2010

The Planning of the section contest for next year has resulted in the contest on the 8th May being moved to the new park in Banbridge Solitude Park. It will be a normal outdoor contest with prize money and trophies awarded (no drum Majors). The move brings this event into the centre of town and it is hoped to have a good turnout of bands and a substantial prize fund for a short street parade after the contests.

On the 19th June we will promote another contest in Bangor Co Down again this is a full contest and it is hoped to have all grade one BANDS competing in Bangor prior to the major championship the following week.

The RSPBA NI Branch is pleased to announce that plans are underway for the PipeUP! Festival which will take place during the week between the European Pipe Band Championships at Stormont and the Ulster Championships in Lisburn, July 31st – August 7th, 2010.

In conjunction with Belfast City Council, the RSPBA NI Branch is planning a series of concerts, solo contest and seminars for all to enjoy and we’re pleased to announce that one of the highlights of the week will be a joint concert by the reigning World Champions Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and six time World Champions Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band. The concert will take place at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on Friday the 6th of August. Ticket details will be available on www.rspbani.org in early 2010.

NI AGM 2009: Grade 4 Dual Registered L/D

It was agreed at the AGM that the National Council Approved Pilot scheme to allow Dual Registered Leading Drummers would apply to both Grade 4A and 4B.

Bands should note:

The Dual registered Leading Drummer is in addition to the minimum 2 snare drummers required in grade 4. i.e. when a Dual Registered Leading Drummer is playing there should be a minimum total of 3 snare drummers.
The Dual Registered Drummer can NOT take part with the Grade 4 band at Major Championships.
The Dual Registered Leading Drummer must hold the main registration with the Higher Grade band with HQ and register the dual role with the Northern Ireland Branch. A form will be made available on the website soon.

NI AGM 2009: Grade 4A Playing Requirements

It was unanimously agreed during the meeting that Grade 4A bands will play the Major Championship playing requirements (2 x 2 Part MAP 2/4 March, 1 x 2 Part MAP Strathspey and 1 x 2 Part MAP Reel) at all local Grade 4A competitions from 2010 onwards.

2010 4A Format

The Branch has received permission from the National Council to use the Grade 4A Major Championship playing requirements at local competitions. The implementation of this format for the local 2010 contest season will be discussed and voted on at the upcoming Branch AGM on November 14th, Trinity Methodist Church Hall, Knockmore Road, Lisburn. We would ask all bands to ensure that their representatives attend the meeting.

Celtic Thistle Solo Tenor Drumming Championships

On Saturday 13^th February, the Royal Hotel in Cookstown will play host to piping, drumming and bass & tenor seminars as well as the Celtic Thistle Solo Tenor Drumming Championships.

Tutors for the seminars are Stuart Liddell from Inveraray Pipe Band, Gordon Brown from Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band, John McFetridge from Cookstown ex Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band and Stephen McQuillan from Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band.

Anyone interested in the tuition is invited to attend.

Judges for the Celtic Thistle Championships are Stephen McQuillan and John McFetridge as well as John Dunne from St.Laurence O’Toole, Dublin.

RSPBA Summer School Success

The RSPBA Summer School on Tour, hosted by the Northern Ireland Branch in Portstewart was again a resounding success. 50 pupils attended over the three days and took classes in Piping, Highland Dancing and Drum Majoring. Tutors John Nevans (piping), Diane Krugh (dancing) and Paula Braiden (Drum Majors) enjoyed their third consecutive summer school and are looking forward to next year already!

The wokshops always culminate with a light hearted display where pupils get the opportunity to show their parents and friends what they've learned and this year was no different. After the Drum Major and highland dancing displays, the pipers surprised everyone by playing tunes that they had composed themselves during the week. Certificates were presented and, as has become tradition, the summer school ended with tutors and pupils taking part in the Gay Gordons, which John Nevans took great delight in playing faster and faster!

As part of the piping classes the students composed some new tunes. Click on the links below to see the tunes.

A big thank you to all the tutors and pupils who helped make this event both successful and a lot of fun!

There are several changes and we would advise all Grade 4 bands to make themselves familiar with the document before planning their winter schedule.

Champion of Champions 2009

The Champion of Champions tables can now be viewed HERE.

The best 5 placing over the 9 competitions count toward the overall total. Some of the prizes are already decided but some are still up for grabs on Saturday.

Bands
Grade 1: Ballycoan are the winners.
Grade 2: Ravara are the winners. (Seven Towers can match their total if they win on Saturday but Ravara would still win on Ulster Championship preference.
Grade 3A: Three way tussle between Aughintober, Killen & Howard Memorial. If Aughintober can manage 2nd or better the title will be theirs. Killen and Howard need a win with Aughintober finishing no better than 3rd to take the title.
Grade 3B: Castlerock are the winners.
Grade 4A: Matt Boyd Memorial and Quinn are the contenders. If Quinn finish second or better the title is theirs, if they finish third they require Matt Boyd to be no higher than 2nd. Matt Boyd need a win with Quinn 3rd or any result where Quinn is no higher than 4th.
Grade 4B: Thiepval Memorial are the winners.

Drum Corps.
Grade 1: Ballycoan are the winners.
Grade 2: Ravara are the winners.
Grade 3A: Howard and Aughintober are contenders with Howard needing a win to take the title on Ulster Championship preference. If Augintober win on Sat or Howard don't then the title is theirs.
Grade 3B: If Castlerock finish higher than 4th on Saturday the title is theirs. Colmcille need to win and Castlerock finish 5th to take the title on Ulster Championship preference.
Grade 4A: Quinn Memorial are the winners.
Grade 4B: Lisnamulligan are the winners.

The day started wet and miserable but thankfully brightened up well in the afternoon. The conditions didn't seem to dampen the spirits of Ballycoan and Cullybackey who both qualified for the Grade 1 Final. The grade 4 bands also got off to a good start with NI Branch bands making up 50% of both the Grade 4A and Grade 4B finals.

Only one first place prize is coming over to NI this year with the Killen band in Grade 3A, our congratulations to them on a magnificant achievement. NI Branch bands took many of the prizes on the day see below. We would also like to congratulate our frequent visitors from the I.P.B.A., Letterkenny and District who took first place in a closely fought Grade 4A and Thiepval Memorial who carried their title of favourites well and took first prize in Grade 4B.

Field Marshal Montgomery were just pipped again to the Grade 1 prize by Simon Fraser University in what is a very high standard at the top of the competition tree. Congratulations also to St Laurence O'Toole, another frequent visitor from the I.P.B.A., on breaking into the top 3 which has been ruled by FMM, SFU & Shotts for over a decade.

The wait is almost over for the biggest event in the Pipe Band calendar. Just a quick note from the NI Branch to wish all bands and drum majors, especially the Northern Irish contingent, the best of luck at Glasgow Green on Saturday. It doesn't look like the weather will be too kind so make sure you pack your cape! We'll see you all back in Portrush next week and hopefully there will be plenty of World Championship Silverware on display.

Ulster Championships

The Ulster Championships were held at the foot of the Mournes in Newcastle. It was a reasonable day for the large crowds. A little rain marred the street parade which in some ways the visitors look forward to. The contest went very smoothly from 11am up until 5 30pm. We had visiting bands from Scotland, Australia and California they all enjoyed their trip to see us once again.

As part of the NI Branch efforts to make the Portrush Contest a weekend event the youth solos in piping and drumming will be held on Friday the 21st August from 3pm at Kerr Street Green. This event has been going for some years now. Entry form is attached with playing instructions. On Friday at 7pm the Dollar Academy band from Scotland will also be playing selections at the Auditorium beside Barrys. Why not make Portrush your finale of the season. We will also have a band from AUSTRALIA competing on the Sat. The City of Queanbeyan.

2009 All Ireland

The 2009 All Ireland Championships were held on the 4th July in Lisburn City. 0ver 60 bands competed from 11am. Thankfully the bad weather forecast did not appear and we had a fine day with sunshine for the march past. Field Marshal won back their All Ireland title and Ravara just edged out Seven Towers for the Grade 2 title. Full results are attached.

The results on the piping festival are attached. The weather was very unsettled at Portadown today with frequent showers this did not mar what was a very successful event for the section.

This event saw the return to competitions St Josephs Glassdrumman and The Police Service Band who finished with a 4th place.

Congratulations to Field Marshal Montgomery on claiming first prize at the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton today. Also getting their 2009 season off to a winning note were Aughintober (Grade 3A) and Castlerock (Grade 3B). Congratulations to all bands taking part especially our I.P.B.A. neighbours Letterkenny & District and Theipval Memorial who won grades 4A and 4B respectively.

Craigavon And Armagh Piping Festival

After a number of years the pipe band scene will return to the spacious grounds of Portadown Rugby Football Club at Chambers Park. The event will take place on the 20th June from 12 noon. More details will follow.

East Antrim Championships

There has been a change of location for the above Championships. This event will now be held at Three Mile Water playing fields, Doagh Road, Newtownabbey on the 23rd May.

Tyrone Championships

The following parking arrangements are in place for the contest in Dungannon on Saturday 9th May. There will be spectator parking at The Howard School and the Football club on the way to Dungannon from the motorway. Bands are asked to travel to Dungannon Park where coaches will bring you back to the venue at the Rugby Club.

The contest starts at 12 noon with grade 4B bands and in the other arena 4A with a start time of 12 10pm.

The 2009 season got off to a good start with over 20 bands taking part in the annual Co. Down Indoor Championships. Congratulations to all those taking part especially at this early stage of the season. The winners were as follows:
