Moneygore

History

Moneygore Pipe Band was established in 1946 having originally started as a flute band around 1930.

Moneygore is a rural townland situated about 2miles outside Rathfriland on the Castlewellan side.

The current Pipe Major is Nigel Hodgen, son of the late Sam Hodgen who founded Andante Percussion, the company which Nigel carries on.

The Leading Drummer is John Gibson who has been with the band for the last 11 years having played previously with Ballycoan and Cullybackey Pipe Band in Grade 1.

Moneygore  had reached Grade 2 in 1988 when Sam Hodgen was Pipe Major, winning prizes at home and in Scotland.

Changes in personnel over the years forced the band to begin a youth development scheme which saw the band competing in Grade 4B in 2005 with a very young band.

The band has been winning prizes regularly in 4B culminating in  coming first in the British Championships in 2007. The band developed over the next few seasons winning prizes on a regular basis in grade 4A and 3B and  in the 2012 season won a magnificent 3rd Place at the World Pipe Band Championship.

Now competing in a fiercely competitive Grade 3A the band hopes to continue to win prizes at home and in Scotland.
